How to: Get Discovered on Snapchat & Gain More Followers
Like any other social network, Snapchat is more fun with more friends. However, finding new friends and discovering new accounts to follow on Snapchat is not the easiest thing to do. As you probably already know, Snapchat is not in the habit of making things easy - well, at least yet!
In this post, we're gonna assume you're already on Snapchat and you know your way around it and now you want a bigger audience - or to get more friends or followers, if you prefer that term. And if you're not on Snapchat yet, read our beginners guide to Snapchat to make sure you won't fall into the Snapchat's complicated vortex!
So what's the best way to get discovered on Snapchat?
Well, this is a tough question with no definitive answer - yet - but let us give you some tips that helped us. Hope they help you, too.
1. Use Other Platforms to Drive Friends & Followers to Your Snapchat
The first tip is to use other platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and ask your friends and followers there to add you on Snapchat. Although this one is obvious like 'duh!?' it's better not to leave anything unsaid. So, make sure you give them either of these so they can find you on Snapchat:
2. Snapchat Public Stories (Our Stories) with a Snapcode Sticker
Well, this one is our favourite. It helps you reach many people who are already on Snapchat, as opposed to other techniques where you have to get people on Snapchat AND follow/add you. It's easier so it's more likely to happen.
To use this trick, first, you need to create a Snapcode Sticker. Here's how to do it:
As you can see in the video, at the end, you can post your story to "My Story," "My Story (Friends Only)," and "Our Story" in addition to sending it to your friends.
If you select "Our Story," Snapchat may feature it on their public stories, especially if you the Location filters (when you're swiping left/right after taking a Snap).
You can always post to "Our Story" - as long as it's available in that location with or without your Snapcode on it. If you want your Snap to get featured anonymously, don't stick your Snapcode on it, but if you want to get discovered by other Snapchatters on Discover page or wandering around SnapMap, put your Snapcode on it. If your story is interesting enough, people can screenshot the story and add you by scanning the screenshot of your Snapcode.
👻 Make sure your Snapcode sticker is not too small, otherwise it can't be scanned.
👻 You can rotate the Snapcode. It still works.
👻 If it's a video Snap, try this: Tap & Hold your Snapcode somewhere in the video... And see what happens! 😁
3. Public Directories
Another way you can gain an audience on Snapchat is to add yourself to public directories, where people can search for other Snapchatters based on their location, type of content, industries, and/or other criteria.
We found two of these directories:
1. Ghostcodes, which was free, quite annoyingly slow, and fairly useful. You had to submit your profile using their app which you can't download anymore as they've shut it down!
2. Snapdex costs $5 to add your profile to the website, and except for the Snapcode, pretty much everything on every profile is editable (which is, to be honest, quite weird). Your profile might end up with links to others blogs or Instagrams with made-up reviews.
4. Create Snapchat Lenses
Okay, this is a long-term strategy, but don't dismiss it as too hard. Snapchat has recently released their Lens Studio. Using Lens Studio, you can create your own filters (officially called Lenses). They can also get featured by Snapchat if they're good or popular.
When you send Snaps with your Lens, your friends can also unlock that lens for 24 hours. Yes, it's a Snapchat thing that 3rd party lenses can only be unlocked for 24 hours. You can unlock it again after that period. There's no limit to the number of times you can do that as far as we know.
If your lenses grow in popularity (go viral), you can get discovered through them as well - although it's not quite easy. Here are a couple of Lenses we created here:
Snapchat's been going through various design changes, but still hasn't perfected discovery yet. While they're - hopefully - working on that, you can use these tips and tricks to get discovered on Snapchat.
